Mackinac Island and Fall Colors, October 11-13, 2002

First are a couple shots looking south across the straits showing the Mackinac Bridge. We dragged ourselves out of the tent at first light expecting a nice sunrise, and this is what we got. The third is of Simona patiently awaiting the boiling of the water for our breakfast hot chocolate. Despite it being after 8am, it was still so dark under the trees in our campsite that with the flash it almost looks like night.
These are from our day exploring Mackinac Island. For the first couple of hours the weather was gray and chilly, but then around noon the sun finally burned through to make a beautiful afternoon. We did some hiking in the interior of the island, and then after lunch rented a tandem bike and cruised the 7-mile M185 loop around the coast of the island, stopping occasionally to take in the sights. The pace is pretty laid back as a rule since cars are not allowed on the island, making transportation by bicycle and horse carriage the norm.
These are just a couple of the many colorful autumn scenes we
saw on the drive home on Sunday.
