Grandpa attended the college at Maryville MO, then called Missouri Normal School. He then taught school around Martinsville, from 1910-1914. He did not care for that, and moved his family to New Hampton MO in 1914. He worked in the general store there, and in 1915 moved back to Martins-
ville, where he worked in the bank and in a general store. In 1917, the family moved to Bethany MO. There he bought (with a cousin) the Barnes-Maxwell Grocery Store. That proved unproffitable, and in 1923 he moved to McFall MO, where he worked in the hardware store. From Aug 1925 until Jan 1926, the family lived in Albany MO where Grandpa worked in the Ford Garage, owned by Mr. Norman. After the garage closed, Grandpa moved to Maitland MO where he worked in the hardware store until 1928.
While in Maitland, my parents met and married, and since Mother was only 17 years old and still in high school, they moved to Mt. Vernon, IL. Keeping their marriage a secret, they lived there until after graduation. While there, Grandpa worked in a hardware store. In 1931, they all moved back to McFall, where Grandpa worked in the general store. In Sept of 1932, Grandpa bought a grocery store at King City, and lost that. From there they went to Elmo MO, where he bought another grocery store, and went broke. In March of 1933, they lived in Maryville MO for only one month, and then moved to Burlington Junction MO. I was born there, and in 1934, we moved to St. Joseph MO. Grandpa and Dad worked in the John Deere store until 1938, when we moved to Fillmore, MO. Grandpa went to work for Horace Gregory in the Hardware Store there, and Dad drove back and forth to St. Joseph and continued working at John Deere as a mechanic. When Mr. Gregory died in 1958, they moved back to St. Joseph. They bought a house at 207 So 30th St. Grandpa did not care for retirement, and became the bookkeeper for Leon Block Outlet Store. He worked there until his death in 1968. Mother sold the house in 1989.
